The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the largest iPhone Apple has ever made and the premium model of Apple’s Latest iPhone 16 series. It packs lots of similarities with its more compact sibling, the iPhone 16 Pro with a bigger 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen, an excellent camera array, new camera controls, a larger battery, and faster charging. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is powered by a faster and more efficient A18 Pro and runs on Apple’s newest iOS.

Design

The iPhone 16 Pro Max carries over much of the design from its predecessor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but with some subtle improvements. The most noticeable aspect is its sleek, shiny titanium exterior frame, which feels premium and solid. The back features a matte glass finish that looks great and reduces fingerprints, although it can still feel slippery without a case. But the matte surface is also less prone to smudges, which is a nice touch.

In terms of size, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is slightly bigger than the 15 Pro Max. It measures 163mm x 77.6mm x 8.25mm and weighs 227 grams—just a little heavier and a bit taller and wider. Despite these small increases in dimensions, the phone still feels comfortable in hand.

Apple claims that the improved Ceramic Shield display on the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 50% tougher than the previous generation, adding to its durability. A big change with the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the addition of the new Camera Control button. Located on the right side of the phone (or on top when held in landscape mode), this button offers a unique, multi-function experience. The bottom of the phone features perforations for the microphone and speakers, as well as a USB-C port that supports Thunderbolt 4 speeds with the right cable. There’s also a speaker slot at the top edge of the display.

Display

The iPhone 16 Pro Max features the largest display on an iPhone yet, boasting a stunning 6.9-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED screen with ProMotion. Only the iPhone 16 Plus comes close with a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED Display.

This 6.9-inch display offers a sharp resolution of 2868 x 1320 pixels, giving it a pixel density of 460 pixels per inch, which ensures that images, text, and videos are crisp and clear, just like on other modern iPhones.

The screen has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, making it perfect for watching videos and browsing, and it’s protected by Apple’s third-generation Ceramic Shield glass. The display also features the pill-shaped Dynamic Island, which houses the front camera and sensors.

Apple has made the bezels slightly smaller, but the difference is so subtle that you might only notice it if comparing the iPhone 16 Pro Max side by side with its predecessor. Overall, the bezels are impressively thin, giving the phone that sleek “all-screen” appearance.

One of the standout features of the display is its 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, which makes everything from scrolling to gaming smooth and responsive. One of the most significant improvements is the minimum brightness, which now drops below 1 nit. This means the screen will be much more comfortable to use in dark settings, such as when using the phone in bed at night.

The display’s adaptive refresh rate is another key feature. It can adjust dynamically, dropping as low as 1Hz when viewing static images or when the phone is in standby mode. This helps conserve battery life while still providing a fluid experience when needed.

In terms of HDR, the iPhone 16 Pro Max supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, making it an excellent device for watching HDR content. Apple’s flexible approach to HDR video playback means you don’t need to view content in fullscreen mode for HDR to work, which adds to the convenience when watching videos in apps that support these formats.

Camera

The iPhone 16 Pro Max camera modules are mostly unchanged, at least in their key specs. It boasts a powerful combination of three rear cameras and a selfie camera.

The main 48 MP wide camera remains the same as it is in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. It comes with a large 1/1.28″ sensor, with an ƒ/1.78 aperture that Apple for some reason now calls a “Fusion” lens instead of a main lens, thus capturing sharp, crisp images even in low-light conditions.

The wide sensor allows more light to enter the lens, producing brighter, more vibrant images. The camera also uses sensor-shift optical image stabilization (OIS), a feature that helps reduce blurriness from shaky hands and allows for clearer, sharper shots in less-than-ideal conditions.

Next is the 12 MP periscope telephoto lens, which supports 5x optical zoom and 3D sensor-shift OIS. This lens gives the iPhone 16 Pro Max a significant edge over its competitors when it comes to zoom capabilities.

This makes the iPhone 16 Pro Max incredibly smooth and responsive, handling demanding apps and multitasking with ease.

The 6-core GPU in the A18 Pro is also much faster, providing up to 20% better performance compared to the previous generation. This means smoother graphics rendering for everything from gaming to photo and video editing, providing an overall superior visual experience.

The additional 17% increase in system memory bandwidth ensures that the GPU has ample data to work with, which further boosts graphical tasks and responsiveness.

In terms of memory, the iPhone 16 Pro Max offers 8GB of RAM across all storage configurations (256GB, 512GB, and 1TB). While this amount of RAM is not groundbreaking by some standards, Apple’s software optimization ensures that the device remains fast and fluid even with multiple apps running simultaneously. The NVMe storage ensures that app loading, file transfers, and data management are swift and responsive.

On the software side, the iPhone 16 Pro Max runs on iOS 18, which brings a number of enhancements. The most notable update is the increased customization options for the home screen. iOS 18 finally allows users to place app icons anywhere on the screen, giving more flexibility in how apps are arranged. Although icons still can’t be placed freely across overlapping spaces, this change makes the iPhone’s interface feel more personalized and adaptable to individual preferences.

iOS 18 also introduces Apple Intelligence, a set of AI-driven features that aim to improve the user experience. Some of these features will be rolled out gradually, and over the next year, they will further enhance the iPhone’s personalization, predictive capabilities, and automation. Additionally, iOS 18 includes improvements to notifications, widgets, and focus modes, making it easier for users to stay organized and productive while reducing distractions.
